Casting is complete for the upcoming off-Broadway production of Nina Raine’s Tribes. As previously announced, David Cromer (Our Town) will direct the North American premiere, which begins performances February 16 at the Barrow Street Theatre. The show will officially open on March 4.
The cast of Tribes will include Will Brill (Our Town), Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood), Steppenwolf Theatre co-founder Jeff Perry (August: Osage County), Susan Pourfar (In the Wake), Gayle Rankin (The Illusion) and Academy Award-nominee and Emmy Award winner Mare Winningham (Georgia). Perry and Winningham played husband and wife in the TV drama Grey's Anatomy.
Tribes follows Billy, a deaf man raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his home of his parents' house. He has adapted brilliantly to his hearing family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood.
The creative team includes set design by Scott Pask, costume design by Tristan Raines, lighting design by Keith Parham, sound design by Daniel Kluger and projection design by Jeff Sugg.
The play received its world premiere at London's Royal Court Theatre in 2010 and earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Play.
